Baby Sling & Carrier Comparisons |
 |
Feature Comparison Chart
† In order to easily nurse a child in the ERGO they must be able to be positioned upright in the carrier and have basic head control. This typically is around 4 to 5 months of age. Some still find this difficult, as the baby's head may not line up with the breast. Infants can nurse as well but one of the shoulder straps has to be loosened.
†† TaylorMade's Water Mesh and Solarveil® slings are fabrics that don't absorb water and drain well.
Types of Slings & Carriers Available
There are many types of slings and baby carriers available. Four of the most popular types are adjustable ring slings, pouches, front carriers and seated carriers. Each type has its features but some have large deficiencies.
Adjustable ring slings allow you to tighten (or loosen) them as much as you need to and they also provide good back support. Seated carriers, like the ERGO Baby Carrier, allow your baby to sit down and provide excellent back support for you. The traditional front carriers that are found at most large baby department stores suspend the baby from their crotch, rather than in a sitting position. This is potentially harmful for your baby's physical development. The other detractor of these front carriers is that they offer poor back support for you. Pouches can not be adjusted (typically) and so they will either fit you properly or they won't. Furthermore, nursing is complicated by these because you can not tighten them to lift your baby higher for nursing. These are the reasons that we specialize in adjustable ring slings and seated carriers like the ERGO baby carrier.
What do you Want from a Sling or Carrier?
This is a very important question to ask yourself because the answer may lead you to a different product than you expected. We find that many people buy what they saw on the street or what their friends told them they needed. Here are 4 key questions to ask yourself:
1) Will you be breastfeeding in the sling or carrier?
2) How often and for how long each day do you plan to use it?
3) Where will you use it? Is style or color more important than comfort and usability?
4) How old is your child and how much do they weigh?
Read on to see how these questions shape your decision.
Which Sling or Carrier is Right for Me?
This may seem like a daunting question considering the wide variety of options available. If you are looking to carry your newborn infant, then we highly recommend an adjustable ring sling like the SlingEZee, Maya Wrap or TaylorMade slings. These adjustable slings allow you hands free and discreet nursing.
All of these slings are rated for infants up to 35 lb toddlers. When your baby is an infant all of the adjustable ring slings work well. As your baby gains weight and grows, the importance of weight distribution and your comfort grows. For many, padded ring slings like SlingEZee provide needed comfort. This is because they have padding on all of the edges of the fabric that come into contact with you and your baby. On an unpadded ring sling these edges can become quite hard as the fabric is pulled taut. Padded slings also have padding in the shoulder area, so as to better distribute the load over your shoulder. The one downside to a padded sling is that it is a little bulkier than an unpadded sling, making it harder to stow in your diaper bag. Just ask yourself, is your priority comfort or compactness? A seated carrier, like the ERGO Baby Carrier, allows you to carry your baby for extended periods of time with great support for your back. They can also be used for children up to 40 lbs. The drawbacks to this type of carrier are that they are a little more involved to put on and they do not easily allow nursing of an infant lacking head control. Once your baby can hold their head up the ERGO is great for a nursing hike through the woods or the mall. The ERGO can be used with an infant insert but if you are planning to use the carrier while breastfeeding we would recommend an adjustable ring sling instead. We find that many people have an adjustable ring sling for everyday use and an ERGO that they use for their longer outings - like trips to the zoo, the mall or going for a hike.
Of course the other thing to keep in mind is where you will use the sling. Some fabrics are designed for use around water, like the TaylorMade Water Mesh and Solarveil® slings. We carry a wide variety of fabrics to suite your style and the occasion. Silk slings for attending a wedding, hemp for durability, Solarveil® for the beach, cotton for everyday use - you get the idea.
